Task: Critical Micronutrient Distribution to Children and Women in Zinder, Niger
Partner: Helen Keller International
Project schedule: September 2009 — February 2010
project description:
BGR is partnering with Helen Keller International (HKI) in providing critical nutritional care to women and young children in Zinder, Niger. Six million children under the age of five die needlessly each year from causes linked to malnutrition; 14,000 children every day. The Zinder region of Niger has one of the world’s highest mortality rates of children under five, estimated at 262 deaths for every 1,000 births. There is also a lack of government assistance and nutrition and child survival intervention programs in the area. HKI’s nutrition project in Zinder aims to reduce childhood malnutrition, morbidity, and mortality in the region by increasing the capacity of local health care providers. The project implements a range of interventions that includes micronutrient supplementation, growth promotion, and improved diets for mothers, pregnant women, and children. With the BGR grant support, HKI plans to increase the effectiveness of the micronutrient supplementation component of the program by establishing community-based distribution of micronutrients through the village volunteer teams currently involved in growth monitoring of young children. Buddhist Global Relief is the first Buddhist organization to support a HKI program in West Africa.
