Healthy Vegetarian Meals for a Low-Income Region of São Paulo

The Brazilian Institute of Studies and Community Support (IBEAC) is a nongovernmental organization operating since 2008 in five neighborhoods in Parelheiros, in the south of São Paulo, a peripheral area with extremely low socioeconomic status. IBEAC brings together consultants in various social work specialties to design, implement, and evaluate social inclusion projects. In 2017, IBEAC set up a communal kitchen to promote healthy diets among Paralheiros residents and invited twelve women for training in the preparation of healthy foods. The following actions are planned: (1) to provide lunch boxes and healthy meals to residents and others who attend local schools, health offices, and events; (2) to organize workshops in organic meal preparation for the cooks at neighborhood schools; (3) to organize children's workshops in healthy food preparation; (4) to develop products from the region's plants and fruits to sell in the local and central markets; and (5) to inspire changes in eating habits.
