Supporting the Education of Slum Children

Community Relief and Development Action (COREDA) is a not-for-profit organization which, since 2009, has been actively providing support services for vulnerable communities in the South West and North West Provinces of Cameroon. Quality primary education has remained a dire need as many children complete primary education without adequate literacy and numeracy skills. This new BGR project (started in 2018) is helping COREDA provide inclusive and holistic quality primary education to orphans and underprivileged children in the semi-urban slums of Tiko, a city in southwest Cameroon. COREDA intends to sustain and improve on an initiative that will support the education of at least 60 children. The project aims to improve the teaching-learning process by providing essential needs for COREDA’s educational center for orphans and less privileged children. These needs include accommodation, furniture and supplies (beds for children living at the center, teaching boards, textbooks, tables and chairs), and food support. BGR funding will cover food costs for at least 60 children for a period of 6 months. It is hoped that these children will acquire adequate literacy and numeracy skills that will enable them to read with fluency, write with accuracy, express themselves, calculate, and integrate themselves into the society.
